how does laser hair reduction work?

Laser hair removal works by using concentrated beams of light to target and destroy hair follicles. Here's how it works step by step:

  1. Light Absorption – The laser emits a specific wavelength of light that is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair.

  2. Heat Damage – The absorbed light converts into heat, which damages the hair follicle and inhibits future hair growth.

  3. Selective Targeting – The laser is designed to target hair while minimizing damage to the surrounding skin.

  4. Hair Growth Cycles Matter – Hair grows in different phases (anagen, catagen, and telogen). Laser hair removal is most effective during the anagen (active growth) phase, so multiple sessions are needed to catch all hairs at the right stage.

what to expect

Sessions: Most people need 6-8 treatments, spaced about 4-6 weeks apart.

Sensation: Feels like a warm snap or rubber band flick.

Best Results: Works best on dark hair and lighter skin, but newer technologies have improved results for various skin tones.

Side Effects?

Most common side effects experienced after a laser hair reduction session are erythema (redness) and follicular edema (swelling) at the treatment site – which may last for a few hours. The application of ice or a cold compress will reduce the discomfort and swelling and you may also use an oral, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, such as acetaminophen.

As with any laser or light-based treatment, there is a rare risk for hyper-pigmentation (darkening of the skin), hypo-pigmentation (lightening of the skin), and burns. These risks are higher in those with darker or more tanned skin.
